How Long Will It Take?
How long will your rebranding initiative take? That’s a fair question, and one that can be a considerable source of anxiety. Unfortunately, this question doesn’t have a simple answer.
Many variables affect the equation, not the least of which is the scope of your program.
Here are a few areas that affect timing:
-
The size of your organization (Larger firms take longer)
-
The number of decision makers (Fewer is faster)
-
The amount of research required
-
The scope and number of marketing deliverables
-
The scale of your internal launch
-
Is a new name required? (Naming can take a great deal of time)
-
Does everything have to receive legal’s approval? (A problem for highly regulated firms)
-
Good pictures (Bad pictures could take down a beautiful design)
-
Text creation
Another factor that affects the overall timeline is how many individual projects can be undertaken simultaneously.
Some tasks have to be taken sequentially (Example: 1 Research; 2. Positioning; 3. Tagline).
Others can be worked on concurrently (Example: website, brochures, style guidelines).
Scenario 1
Firm Size: Small
Time: 3 - 5 weeks
Needs: Research, positioning, messaging, logo, website design & development.
Scenario 2
Firm Size: Small | Medium
Time: 1- 2 months
Needs: Research, positioning, messaging, logo, tagline, website design & development, basic brand style guidelines.
Scenario 3
Firm Size: Medium
Time: 3 - 4 months
Needs: Research, positioning, messaging, logo, tagline, website design & development, multi-piece collateral design & writing, messaging architecture, expanded brand style guidelines, marketing plan.
For large firms, the timeline can be similar if the number of decision-makers is small. If consensus is required among multiple partners and offices, the process can take twice as long, or longer.
